Car air con blowing warm or smelling musty? The usual causes, when a re-gas is enough, when there's a leak to find, and why newer cars use R1234yf.
Air conditioning faults tend to show up on the first hot day of the year, when everyone needs their car cooled down at once. The good news is that most problems fall into a handful of causes, and knowing which one you have saves both time and money.
How car air conditioning works
A compressor, driven by the engine or, on hybrids and electric cars, by an electric motor, pressurises refrigerant gas. The gas releases heat through the condenser at the front of the car, then expands and absorbs heat in the evaporator behind the dashboard. That's what cools the air blown into the cabin. The system also removes moisture, which is why air con clears a misted windscreen so quickly.
Why air con stops cooling
Slow, natural loss of refrigerant
Even a healthy system loses a small amount of refrigerant over time through hoses and seals. After a few years, it may simply not have enough gas to cool properly. If the air con has faded gradually, a re-gas is often all it needs.
A leak
If cooling stopped suddenly, or a re-gas only lasts weeks, there's a leak. Common places include:
- the condenser, which sits at the front of the car and can be damaged by stones;
- pipe joints and O-ring seals;
- the compressor seals;
- the evaporator inside the dashboard, which is less common but more involved to repair.
Re-gassing a leaking system without finding the leak is money that disappears with the gas. A proper air con service includes a vacuum test, and where needed, leak detection using UV dye or an electronic detector.
Mechanical and electrical faults
A failed compressor clutch, a faulty pressure sensor, a blown fuse or relay, or a condenser fan that isn't running can all stop the system working even when it has plenty of gas. If the air is cold on one side of the car but not the other, the fault is more likely to be a blend flap actuator in the dashboard than the refrigerant.

The two gases aren't interchangeable. Your car must be filled with the refrigerant it was designed for, using equipment made for that gas, and a system should never be topped up with a mixture. Your car's refrigerant type is usually shown on a label under the bonnet. R1234yf is more expensive than R134a, which is why a re-gas on a newer car usually costs more.
Musty or damp smell from the vents?
The evaporator is cold and wet, so bacteria and mould can grow on it, especially if the car is parked straight after using the air con. An antibacterial treatment cleans the system, and replacing the cabin (pollen) filter at the same time stops the smell coming straight back.
A simple habit helps: switch off the air con a few minutes before the end of your journey, but leave the fan running, so the evaporator dries out.
Should I use air con in winter?
Yes. It's the quickest way to demist the windscreen, because it dries the air. Running the system regularly also keeps oil circulating to the compressor and seals, which helps prevent leaks from developing when it's left unused for months.
Hybrids and electric cars
Many hybrid and electric cars use an electric compressor, which needs a special insulating oil. Contaminating it with the wrong oil can damage the compressor, so these cars need equipment and procedures designed for them.
